Nice Work! :D

I'm a bit out of touch with FDS now because I've been so busy and just blindly grabbing updates for the latest dats, so:

1) Am I still right in understanding that these VC extracted dumps are a 'pure/clean' dump, i.e. a full 524288 bytes per side (IIRC, the padding - usually 2 bytes) was at the beginning/end of a 'file' which was missed by the dumper as a sort of copy protection?

2) They will be unplayable by existing PC emulators because the dump is unrecognisable since it has a file table that doesn't match it's file contents? - copy protection only?

3) How are they being dealt with for the dat - do we need to figure out how to 'pad' existing dumps and fix the file counts/FAT? I know BF had a play with a 'mario' dump a while back (...if you know what dump refers to in England, it may be funny), but don't know the outcome.

Please fill me in. :gba:

Yes, these extracted fds-images are believed to be pure. Please read the first post of this thread for more info about what's missing from current dumps

Yes, they are unplayable by existing emulators.

No-Intro usually doesn't add extracted images to the offcial dats, but I could make a custom dat for them.

many VC releases have been altered from the regular release (many NES and SNES games!) and there are also some N64 titles with versions that are unfound yet despite intensive search was done. It is not definite that all versions you find as VC also exist on real carts.

Yes, I've only just recently discovered this. I've always been under the pretence that they were simply undiscovered/undumped carts.

The annoying thing about this is not knowing whether or not Nintendo has a team of gameplayers/coders re-writing or fixing these retro games for VC... OR ... these 'new' dumps appearing in VC wads are actually from a multitude of 'beta' revision 1.x carts that never saw the light of day due to the demise of that particular console platform. It does make you wonder... :?

It tends to be a case-by-case scenario at times. Most of Nintendo's own modifications, though, tend to be "new" modifications designed to make games easier to emulate. Games tend to be modified for various reasons, including partial translations for import titles, removal of licensing-sensitive data (Kawasakis in Waverace 64, licensed football teams in Tecmo Bowl), bugfixes (Phantasy Star: the End of the Millennium's lvl99 bug).

As a member of Sonic Retro I've read this thread which had some discussions on VC modifications;

http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=16550

It's a neat guide to some of the various tweaks they may try.

Elevator Action didn't contain the unaltered Rev A we were hoping for but I still managed to rebuild the original Rev A from the extracted WAD. One down :D
