Cross-platform related games database?

Post by Macarro » 24 Sep 2013 14:56

Has anyone ever started or planned a database containing different versions of the same game? It could be something simple, just a list of general names for the games and a list containing the system and crc32 for identifying the ROMs wich belong to those games. Something like:

What's the advantage over using multiple databases pertaining to only one platform?

The idea is not to substitute the existing databases. Instead, this new database would be useful:

a) to see all the versions for certain game at once.

b) to use in emulator front-ends, wich is my main idea. You choose a game, and then you choose what version do you want to play. Or, as another example, you could rate the ROMs and when you want to play a game, automatically you start playing the highest rated version.

See the first game on your list: The Addams Family. That is at least three distinct games you are lumping together.
SNES and Genesis/Mega Drive are one game.
The NES version is a completely different game (and I think the Game Gear and Master System versions are ports of the NES game).
And Game Boy is its own game.

That is just a quick example. I know several games could be splitted because their big differences. On the other hand, I think is better to have as few games as possible. That's the main reason behind this DAT.
