That is a very interesting question/thought.

I've recently been playing around with the Wii U scene. When it comes to the eShop games (VC, Retail or eShop), they all come in that same format, so when/if we ever want to get around to making a DAT for Wii U DLC that will be it's "native" format (vs. retail disc dumps that would be .wud; but that's for Redump to work on).

So I guess it would make more sense for the 3DS to be the same? It's really a matter of convenience to have everything in one nice, neat little package in a .cia file. Easier to manage and keep track of but again not necessarily it's "native" (or "purist") format.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Having the a 3DS DLC & New 3DS DLC Dat in it's native form of encrypted .cia is something I also believe in & would like to contribute with.

Plenty of good tools are out there now so getting good clean dumps isn't a problem, the revision thing would need looking at, changing revision numbers in .cia is easy enough but I haven't tested if it effects how clean the dump is but a bit of research could be done to see how that works.

The 3DS DLC dats have been quite quiet for a long time now, scene groups very rarely release eshop roms anymore (due to .3ds not being as popular as it used to be & the ability to dump your own games due to keys being widely available to all I guess) the "z's" part of the dat hasn't been updated for a long time either which is a good reason IMO to get these new dats going.

If you guys at no intro are interested in creating these dat's then I would b3 happy to contribute & help building the collection.

why would you change the version number in a cia, unless to correct it?
different versions have different content - not just different version numbers.

Good point, I was thinking of the fixing method for something else.

That may cause a bit of a problem then, hopefully the community can help with keys/cia's of non updated versions

Different versions of the same title don't need different keys. It is just a matter of downloading (or dumping from a console if the the version is removed from the CDN).

It needs to be confirmed which of all the different version numbers correspond:
TMD filename
TMD
CIA
NCCH
In-game numbers (e.g on title screen).

We are going to start with the new 3DS DLC dat .

About the version number , i am going to use the version number from nintendo like it is in the tmd.

Its like here too , https://www.3dbrew.org/wiki/VersionList

Some games have updates but you don't see a version string in the game.
So then it is hard to determine what version it should be.

By "new 3DS DLC dat" I take it you mean the a new .cia version of the 3DS DLC dat?

Will you be starting one for the New 3DS DLC titles as well?

No cia files , the encrypted files for making a cia files.

It will be like this :

Binding of Isaac, The - Rebirth (Europe)\
000400000f700900\
00000006
00000007
tmd

That's a shame that decision was made so quickly.

A dat of .cia files is why this thread was created & plenty of others posted before. It is what was discussed & requested by loads of users on various sites on the net.

Don't get me wrong I will collect the set as it is shared as collecting is king but the .cia set would've been better imo

If you prefer .cia files because they are more easy to play & pirate, I have to remember that no-intro purpose is having dumps as 1:1 original as possible.
Encrypted dumps, not working on flashcards or not recognized by emulators, if clean and in their native format are preferred.
If your argument is about a better technical format, I am like Jon Snow :o

It's nothing to do with piracy although most of the no intro collections are ready for piracy & can be played
I agree people do want roms in a playable format either on emulators or flashcards which is piracy but a massive amount of users (like me) enjoy the collecting of these sets.

The .cia format is the format people believe is the native format for 3DS DLC & what they have been asking for including the op who started this thread & others who posted in it & in plenty of other threads on different sites.

Anywho if that is the format you decided to release the dat in then I will respect that & I look forward to collecting the new set(s)
