[SNES]Extracted ROM's from Nintendo Super System (MAME)

Post by fprietog » 18 Aug 2012 18:19

With the new change introduced in No-Intro DAT's that allow extracted ROMs to be included (see this topic: ttp://forums.no-intro.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2296) I've done a little research on MAME ROMs for Nintendo Super System that is just a SNES adapted to be played in an arcade cabinet. These games can be played in an SNES or an emulator. Also all these games are legit releases from Nintendo so may be included in No-Intro's SNES list. Some of them has notorious differences with the retail ones so I thing them are interesting enough.

Here is the list of the twelve games of Nintendo Super System included in MAME and it's current status in No-Intro:
  • - Act Raiser (Nintendo Super System) Not included in No-Intro
    - The Addams Family (Nintendo Super System) Not included in No-Intro
    - Contra 3: The Alien Wars (Nintendo Super System) Included in No-Intro
    - David Crane's Amazing Tennis (Nintendo Super System) Not included in No-Intro
    - F-Zero (Nintendo Super System) Included in No-Intro
    - Lethal Weapon (Nintendo Super System) Not included in No-Intro
    - NCAA Basketball (Nintendo Super System) Not included in No-Intro
    - Robocop 3 (Nintendo Super System) Not included in No-Intro
    - Skins Game (Nintendo Super System) Not included in No-Intro
    - Super Mario World (Nintendo Super System) Not included in No-Intro
    - Super Soccer (Nintendo Super System) Not included in No-Intro
    - Super Tennis (Nintendo Super System) Not included in No-Intro
All games are perfect dumps (SNES internal checksum ok) except "Super Mario World". Unfortunately there is not a good dump of this game, but it run's very well.

And here is all the individual information for al these games:

I'll take a look to the MAME ROMs for the "Super Famicom Box" (another SNES in disguise) and the SNES bootlegs.

Best regards.

The Super Famicom Box used retail ROMs (though the v1.1 edition of Star Fox comes from it, and doesn't seem to have a retail release).

You're true. All the ROMs from SUPER FAMICOM BOX are retail ROMs and are included in No-Intro set, except the Attraction ROM, but it can't be executed in a real SNES or in an emulator. I guess that it need extra hardware to manage slots and that kind of things...

Here is the info for all the games:

Now I'm looking the SNES Bootlegs. These bootlegs are encrypted but MAME team already decrypted them, So it's just a matter of apply the MAME decryption code in order to get a decrypted ROM ready to use in an SNES. I'm working on it but I know that No-Intro set will not cover it at all since these ROMs are just hacks.

Best regards.

Re: [SNES]Extracted ROM's from Nintendo Super System (MAME)

Post by fprietog » 20 Aug 2012 23:54

Well, I finished to decrypt the six SNES Bootleg ROMs from MAME. I've tested them in a real SNES and an emulator (BSNES) and here are the results:

denseib, Ghost Chaser Densei (SNES bootleg)
The decrypted game runs in the real SNES and in BSNES but unfortunately it's not playable unless somebody finds the way to insert a coin... You can only view the attract mode.
Image

endless, Gundam Wing: Endless Duel (SNES bootleg)
This game isn't playable in MAME because the decryption is not broken yet.

ffight2b, Final Fight 2 (SNES bootleg)
The decrypted game runs in the real SNES and in BSNES. It starts with some credits so it is playable
Image

iron, Iron (SNES bootleg)
The decrypted game runs in the real SNES and in BSNES but unfortunately it's not playable unless somebody finds the way to insert a coin... You can only view the attract mode, but without music. MAME emulates the music but I think it's because of an emulated dip switch in SNES driver memory so I can't fix it since I don't have SNES programming skills.

kinstb, Killer Instinct (SNES bootleg)
The decrypted game runs in the real SNES and in BSNES but unfortunately it's not playable unless somebody finds the way to insert a coin... You can only view the attract mode.

sblast2b, Sonic Blast Man 2 Special Turbo (SNES bootleg)
This game is not only crypt but protected. I've decrypted it but I can't crack the protection code (you know, no idea of SNES programming). MAME patch a couple of values in SNES driver memory to bypass the protection so it should be easy for an experienced programmer to crack it.

And that's all, only one of the six games is really playable in the SNES. I don't provide file information since these games are plain hacks and I guess them will be not covered by No-Intro.

Best regards.

I've modified the first post (games extracted from "Nintendo Super System" ROMs) because the games "F-Zero (Nintendo Super System)" and "Super Tennis (Nintendo Super System)", both marked as baddump in MAME, are just overdumped ROMs,so can be easily fixed trimming their last 524288 bytes.

Once done you can see that the game "F-Zero (Nintendo Super System)" is just the retail ROM, so it is already included in No-Intro SNES set.

Actually, the ActRaiser action mode is included in the PAL version of the retail game.
However, in the PAL version, like in the other Quintet games, only the sound was adjusted to 50hz but the game play is still running at 60hz, so it's slower.
Also, the arcade version allows you continue after game over while the PAL version (action mode) does not.
Also the arcade/action mode has power-ups that allow you to change your magic midstage as well as a max-HP-up item (because even in the PAL retail, action mode is independent of save progress).

Technically the "Zone Select" in Super Mario World just changes how much of the game is unlocked when you start (considering the NSS used time-based credits, moving around the map could waste a lot of time).
