[SNES] Spellcraft

Post by badinsults » 08 Jun 2014 06:51

The Spellcraft ROM image in the No Intro database is most definitely hacked. The original source of the ROM image was from the BBS scene group, Magical, which included a intro tacked onto the end of the binary. However, whoever removed the intro also hacked the internal header of the game, which originally had the header info for Smash TV. Smash TV code is splattered throughout the binary, and likely was the game that was on the source EPROM originally. My suggestion would be to hack the original internal header back into the ROM image, to be as close to the original dump as possible. The notes from the original scene release even mention the oddity of the internal header.

Ah, excellent research, badinsults. :)

Switching the SNES header to the original dumped one should be simple, of course, but I have one question: What's your opinion on the integrity of the "junk" beginning at the FF930 mark that repeats until the 100000 mark? It consists of "4E 69 6E 20 20 34 31 37" or "Nin 417" repeatedly.

EDIT: That "Nin 417" data is present in multiple locations of "Street Fighter II (USA)" (including the end, same as in SpellCraft) and possibly other ROMs in the family as well. What relation does Street Fighter II have with SpellCraft?

Again, it could be a case that Street Fighter II was burned on the EPROM previously. I've found several prototypes where data from other games were present in the blank areas. A good example is the prototype of Battle Blaze, which has lots of F-Zero stuff in it.

To continue on this, the ROM now in the database hasn't got the RESET offset in the header corrected so it tries to load the now-non-existent intro on load. Change 0x7FFC to 75 80 to correct this.
