Re: Handheld and Console Bad Dumps

The FDS games are probably unlikely to see a good dump.
From what I've heard, FDS disks have a checksum for each file, but those aren't included in good dumps.
And even to get many of the current "good" dumps was because of one person (Yuki I think their name was) who bought a ton of sealed copies and dumped them, as supposedly there is some info on the disks that gets erased when the game is run.
As to the NES... for the Bugs Bunny Birthday Bash, the problem was that the whereabouts of the owner of the cart was long lost by the time it was discovered, so it was only changed into a playable state by hacking in code from the retail version. The other two US games were altered by the people at NintendoAge who released them. I'm not certain why. I've heard it could've been because the owner didn't want the cart devalued but I've also heard the NA people just wanted to.
And if Exerion proto is the NintendoAge, I'm pretty sure the region on that should be USA, not Japan. As it uses the newer Jaleco logo (from 1988 on. Supposedly the game was meant for a 1989 release in the US. But the Japanese version was released in 1985 when Jaleco used their older logo) Also the altered text on the title screen exactly fits the space (possibly they added a few spaces of padding, but I did check that in the ROM to see the string length) for the text "LICENSED BY NINTENDO" which was (almost?) used exclusively in western releases (where it was mandatory).

Picking apart Nintendo's FDS emulation for VC and Animal Crossing, they use a format which includes said checksums and is a clean 128KB for a dual-sided disk. It's given the extension ".qd" from Animal Crossing IIRC.

Is there any way we can get this checksum info and add it to the ROM files to complete them? It would be a shame to lose this data, of course. Is it at all affected by the overwriting action of the game saving process?

As an aside: What's going on with "Time Twist - Rekishi no Katasumi de (Japan)"? It's twice the size of a normal dual-sided FDS game. A little research showed me that the game was released on two disks. With that in mind, shouldn't No-Intro split them as well? "Time Twist - Rekishi no Katasumi de (Japan) (Disk 1)" and "Time Twist - Rekishi no Katasumi de (Japan) (Disk 2)" would seem appropriate, but we should read the boxes well to verify (yes, BOXES, because the disks were sold separately).

I second the need for a proper FDS dumper soon! And also dumping sealed games should be a priority as the magnetic media will cease soon.

I also hope that a proper dumper will be released before it's too late, however I don't believe the checksum data is changed, so we shouldn't need to buy sealed games again. Also, I'm buying and dumping more sealed FDS games. If you want, feel free to make a donate to my PayPal (all funds will go to buying more sealed FDS games): buddybenj@gmail.com. Smash Ping Pong, Baseball, and Metroid are all at very high priority (IMO) for games that need to be properly dumped.

Does anyone know of anybody who is very knowledgeable in the Famicom Disk System and could potentially build a custom dumped for No-Intro that can also dump CRC and gap data?

A little research showed me that the game was released on two disks. With that in mind, shouldn't No-Intro split them as well? "Time Twist - Rekishi no Katasumi de (Japan) (Disk 1)" and "Time Twist - Rekishi no Katasumi de (Japan) (Disk 2)" would seem appropriate, but we should read the boxes well to verify (yes, BOXES, because the disks were sold separately).
FWIW, there are 11 items in No-Intro's database that are dual disk. They should definitely be split IMO. I made a discussion about this on DAT-o-MATIC, but I guess the maintainer of the DAT hasn't checked in a while.

I think ALL the two disk (at least, the official) games were sold as separate chapters (as I think they were all text-adventure games).
Nintendo has been inconsistent in regards to rereleases.
While I think Famicom Detective Club II was sold as a single game on SFC (Nintendo Power), Onigashima was sold as two games (retail).
Likewise, I think both parts were sold together on GBA but individually on VC. But I'm not certain on the latter.

I think the parts where known as "Zenpen" and "Kouhen" meaning first and later parts.

Does anyone know if Akumajou Dracula (Japan) (Rev 2) ever got properly dumped? So far, my search queries have all come up dry.
