(Virtual Console) GB/GBC dumps (European/USA/JAP/KOR)

Post by dreimer » 25 Jul 2018 00:26

As already warned... I wondered what I would find in the 3ds VC entries and I was surprised. This time I downloaded all language entries at once and removed all ROMs being duplicates which were quite a few. ((World) declared ROMs and stuff are all the same) Once more I used Wii U USB Helper for that. Results were cia files as expected on 3ds. For getting the ROMs I used HackingToolkit9DS's Mass Extract Mode and then threw together all roms folders of the extracted ROMFS.
WARNING: Some cia files contained ROM patches in a subfolder for these. I ignored them not knowing how to use and what they do at all.

First the files I found and we already have, but his time without making this topic a mess with BIIIG lists:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/wcrdq236xg94j43/gb.txt?dl=0
https://www.dropbox.com/s/rwu1lm5ilpng98r/gbc.txt?dl=0

And then the few ones we do not have:
GB:
DMGPCA-0.159 (Pac Man with wrong ROM size in header?)
Dmgrae-1.108 (Gargoyle's Quest)

https://www.dropbox.com/s/rsudj6z8lazp07o/gb.7z?dl=0

GBC:
DMGAHHJ1.1 (Card Hero JAP?)
DMGAPSD0.J15 (Pokemon Yellow German)
Dmgapse0.h08 (Pokemon Yellow English)
DMGAPSF0.J16 (Pokemon Yellow French)
DMGAPSI0.J19 (Pokemon Yellow Italian)
DMGAPSS0.J17 (Pokemon Yellow Spain)
DMGBHEJ1.J69 (No clue what game this is, looks cool though. JAP)

https://www.dropbox.com/s/99ccxcxynwmgdzf/gbc.7z?dl=0

And once more. If you need more stuff to add these, tell me what to do and you get it. Otherwise If you wanna verify, I told in both topics what I did and what I used to accomplish it. All tools are easily found by googling the name.

I think I will try to look at the 3ds GBA set next.
1. to be able to tell what ROMs are on Wii U and 3DS to help you to declare them correctly.
2. Maybe there are even more unknown ones.
What comes after... we will see. Wii would be interesting, too, but here Wii U USB Helper is no help.

for Wii you may want to contact Larsenv on the VGPC discord. There's a link to it somewhere on the no-intro forums (can't get it for you right now).

That's a very, very nice find!!! :trumpet: That's Shin Megami Tensei Devil Children Kuro no Sho v1.1. We already suspected it exists, but this confirms it!
I tried in vain to find a cartridge copy during my last Japan visit, so we might need to tag it VC at this point. However, I had a quick look and the changes are similar to the Shin Megami Tensei Aka no Sho v1.1 differences, so I suspect they fixed the same bug in both versions :D :D

Maybe you could post these anyway, so we preserve them until we know what to do with them? I'm currently unaware how other VC titles are handled.

I also checked your contributions some more :)

These are all in the Game Boy DAT, so that's why they popped up as missing for you, I guess. Of all of these, only Pokemon - Edicion Amarilla - Edicion Especial Pikachu (Spain) DMGAPSS0.J17 is not verified.

I'll add all of your VC "redumps" when time permits.

GB:
DMGPCA-0.159 (Pac Man with wrong ROM size in header?)
Dmgrae-1.108 (Gargoyle's Quest)
Pac-Man (Japan) DMGPCA-0.159 is in the DoM. The VC title is simply 128kB instead of 64kB with the latter half all 0xFF bytes. Since we don't have a current redump, this might indicate:
  • this is actually the proper image and somebody trimmed the version in DoM,
  • Nintendo re-released the 64kB ROM as 128kB when ROM prices weren't a concern anymore and that's the final version they archived, or
  • Nintendo simply distributes it for Virtual Console this way
Gargoyle's Quest (USA, Europe)(Rev 1) Dmgrae-1.108 is not currently in DoM. There are only two changes:
  • The title in the internal game header was corrected from "GARGOYLE'S" to "GARGOYLE'S QUEST"
  • The copyright information on the title screen was changed (with care taken not to shift any data inside the ROM image):
    Rev 0: Image
    Rev 1: Image
The change of the copyright string (and no functional bug fix) might indicate this is a Virtual Console-exclusive change, so I'd say until a physical copy is found, this should be tagged Virtual Console.

DMGBHEJ1.J69 (No clue what game this is, looks cool though. JAP)
Trade & Battle Card Hero (Japan) (Rev 1) DMGAHHJ1.1 and Shin Megami Tensei Devil Children - Kuro no Sho (Japan) (Rev 1) DMGBHEJ1.J69 are both currently not in DoM.

Shin Megami Tensei Devil Children - Kuro no Sho (Japan) (Rev 1) was suspected to exist — due to the existence of Shin Megami Tensei Devil Children - Aka no Sho (Japan) (Rev 1) which was finally redumped last year and verified this year — but unfortunately could not be found in cartridge form in the wild.
Kuro Rev 1 contains the same bugfixes as Aka Rev 1. I just finished trimming down a binary comparison of both ROMs to their Rev 0 counterparts here. Semantic analysis will follow some time soon.

Cannot speak to Card Hero yet, but I'll probably take a look. If it's more than a copyright change, I'd be inclined to believe it's also a revision that exists physically.

There appears to be a re-release cartridge of Gargoyle's Quest with serial

DMG-RA-NOE-1

I'm not sure about the stamp, it looks a bit like an A on the right but it might be something else. At least we should keep an eye on this variant.

Does the VC version feature an updated version byte in the header?

All that don't have a dumped non-VC copy should be marked as Virtual Console in my opinion.

Well, as long as you somehow mark them as not cart based release, all is fine IMO, but this is what (3DS/WiiU/Blergh Virtual Console) says ^^But yeah, I think all not found on cart need a flag

That's the way it has been done before. If someone wants to change that it should probably be a separate discussion.

The ebay-cartridge is the revision 1.1. I asked about the stamp and the title screen and we have a dice here. I purchased it and it will arrive soon hopefully.

Nice! Interesting that the developer put version info on the title screen.

I'm only referring to the "Capcom Co Ltd" in the title instead of "Capcom USA". The label stamp was 11A indicating a new revision but the title screen is really fool proof.
